Affordable Maui Vacation - Hana day trip
Driving on past Hana about 10 miles and you will come to the Kapahului district of Haleakala National Park. Carved into Kipahului, is O'heo gulch. The streams flowing throgh O'heo gulch form several pools and the area includes camping, and hiking.
From the main parking lot you can take the two mile Pipiwai trail as it follows the stream up into bamboo forests and leads to the 400 foot Waimoku Falls. It can take three to five hours, depending on how much hiking you are used to, and how often you stop for pictures.
If you are less adventurous, you can follow the path down to the lower pools. The lower pools can be a great place for a refreshing swim. However, the stream and pools can be unpredictable and flash floods are common. Always obey all caution signs and warnings from Rangers.
Since the 6.7 magnitude earthquake of October 15,2006, the road around the island has been closed. So your trip back to your Lahaina home rental or Kaanapali condo rental will be back the way you came. Remember, a day trip to Hana can be a very long day, so plan ahead, don't rush, and enjoy...
