Last week we explored the leeward side of West Maui via the Pali Trail. This week we travel over to the windward site, and experience the cooler, wetter side of Maui. The Waihee Ridge Trail is almost directly opposite the Pali Trail. From Kahekili Highway (340) turn up Maluhia Road. The drive from your Kaanapali vacation condo, or Lahaina vacation home will be a bit longer, but still only about an hour away.
The Waihee Ridge Trail starts at 1,000 feet and climbs the West Maui mountains through Guava, Norfolk pines, Eucalyptus trees, and native Ohia. It climbs up to 2,563 feet, into wet native scrub forest. The weather along this trail can change quickly. It can be sunny and clear, and minutes later the clouds roll in and you're hiking through the mist. So bring sunscreen, and maybe a light jacket or shirt to put on if it's starts getting cold and wet; and bring water. And of course, a camera. If your timing is right, you may get some great shots of red and yellow Ohia blossoms. Next week, we'll take a drive...
