The island of Maui is made up of two volcanoes that join together to for a valley in between. This gives rise the Maui's nick name of "The Valley Isle." The larger of the two volcanoes makes up the entire east side of the island - Haleakala. Haleakala stands 10,023 feet above sea level. Another 18,000 feet extend below the ocean to it's true base on the ocean floor; making it one of the tallest mountains in the world. Previously we've talked about taking a day trip to drive around the side of Haleakala, along the road to Hana. Over the next few weeks we'll explore the rest of the mountain. From taking a early morning trip to view the sun rising over the crater, (actually an erosional depression, more on that later.) to hiking and camping inside.
