The island of Maui is made up of two volcanoes that join together to for a valley in between. This gives rise the Maui's nick name of "The Valley Isle." The larger of the two volcanoes makes up the entire east side of the island - Haleakala. Haleakala stands 10,023 feet above sea level. Another 18,000 feet extend below the ocean to it's true base on the ocean floor; making it one of the tallest mountains in the world. Previously we've talked about taking a day trip to drive around the side of Haleakala, along the road to Hana. Over the next few weeks we'll explore the rest of the mountain. From taking a early morning trip to view the sun rising over the crater, (actually an erosional depression, more on that later.) to hiking and camping inside. As we've said before, not all the good things on Maui cost money. If you are looking for an affordable Maui vacation, there's lots to do, and lots to see. Stay tuned... |
