Did you know that two streams formed what we refer to as Haleakala Crater? Starting out separately, these two streams caused depressions in the mountain, like valleys. Eventually, they met and formed the crater. This of course took place during a time of dormancy, but the mountain wasn't finished. Volcanic activity resumed and filled much of the valley formed by the streams. To top it off, a series of volcanic bombs, ash, spatter and cinder colorfully developed the cones we see there today.
Haleakala's last bout of volcanic activity was not so historically distant as you might think. While George Washington was giving the first State of the Union Address in 1790, Haleakala was erupting. Is the “House of the Sun” finished with its geological fireworks? Fortunately, we have found no sign that its activity will resume.
It's a long, scenic drive to the crater from most Maui condos and hotels, but if you can manage to make it to the summit for the sunrise, dress warm. If you're coming from one of our luxury West Maui home rentals or a resort like the Whaler on Kaanapali Beach, you've probably never needed anything but shorts and sandals. At an elevation of 10,023 feet, the summit temperatures often dip below zero. The park does not sell food, clothing, or gas, so make sure you're prepared. Visit the Haleakala National Park website for more information, including fees and reservations. You may also want to check for exact sunrise and sunset times.
You will find the experience to be well worth the effort of being prepared. When the sun rises, the beautiful colors in the crater are drawn out as if by magic, and you will be able to comprehend the sheer vastness of our geological wonder called Haleakala Crater. Who knows, you may walk away believing that the best things in life truly are free. |
