"That Bites" Week at the Maui Ocean Center

If you are visiting for Thanksgiving and want to tie the holiday into your tropical island vacation somehow, the Maui Ocean Center has something perfect for the whole family. From the 23rd-29th, the Center will delight visitors with a smorgasbord of presentations, cooking demonstrations, a recipe contest and food specials. At the same time, guests will learn about sustainable seafood and its special importance in Hawaii. Read on to find out just how educational and fun this experience can be.
A "Meet the Diver" tour will be presented to share the exciting duties of a Maui Ocean Center Diver. There will be supervised, hands-on feeding of hammerhead sharks, green sea turtles and various surge zone creatures. Participants will also get a souvenir from the Maui Ocean Center Store. Alternatively, there will also be a "Meet the Aquarist" tour which offers the same activities but the tour will be centered around the daily work of the aquarist.
The Sustainable Seafood Cooking Demonstration will feature James Beard Rising Star Chef nominee Henry Tariga. Henry will present a short cooking demo while educating visitors on sustainable seafood in Hawaii. He will also be demonstrating a special item that will be available at the Seascape Ma'alaea Restaurant for the day. Sorry. We can't tell you what it is.

One of the most unique features of "That Bites" week is the Sustainable & Invasive Seafood Recipe contest. Guest recipes submitted between the 1st and the 15th of the month will be judged and the twenty winning recipes will be passed out to guests and listed on the Maui Ocean Center website. The recipes will feature either sustainable seafood or invasive species as the main ingredient.
Throughout the week, certain exhibits will include photo displays showing guests what is eaten by the animals in those exhibits. At half-past noon daily during "That Bites" week, guests will be able to watch "Chef Diver" prepare food and feed the animals in Hammerhead Harbor.
If that wasn't enough, the Ocean Center's retail store will give special discounts on all food items and throughout the week, food samples will be offered around the aquarium.
Needless to say, after reading up on everything that's going on there, we can safely recommend making a trip to the Ocean Center for these events. It's one of the best attractions on the island, even when it isn't celebrating Thanksgiving. Be sure to read up on the details of "That Bites" week.
