New Hawaiian Music Series in Lahaina

Experience the wonderful music of Hawaii on your Maui vacation. It may very well be the most cherished part of Hawaiian culture, and as such, you shouldn't miss it. Song and dance together have always been the primary tool for passing information from generation to generation in Hawaiian culture. In that respect, each performer's contribution has been something like a book. With everyone cooperating to pass knowledge down through music and hula, the product serves the same function as a library, only it's much more fun.
On March 12th, the new Hawaiian music series will kick off in Lahaina on the Baldwin Museum lawn from 11a.m. to 12:30p.m. Maui's much loved Uncle Richard Ho'opi'i will be playing. Born in the little village of Kahakuloa, Unlce Richard has lead a life of immersion in Hawaiian rural culture including tarot farming and fishing. He and his brothers started their own band called The Ho'onanea Serenaders which, after several years, became known as The Ho'opi'i Brothers. After recording seven albums and performing widely, he and his brother were 1997 recipients of the National Endowment for the Arts Folk Heritage Fellowship, America's highest honor for traditional artists. He has been practicing the traditional Hawaiian art of leo ki'eki'e (falsetto) for most of his life.
Uncle Richard's performance will be just the beginning. Various local groups will perform in the future on the second Thursday of each month for 10 months total. This series will be hosted by Allen Pokipala, a.k.a. "Braddah Poki" of Pacific Radio Group. See the Lahaina Restoration Foundation website for more information.
