Whispering Winds Maui Bamboo Forest

Maui Vacation Rental Specials and Deals

Tucked away amid the lush jungles in Hana, you will find Whispering Winds Bamboo Farm. When you imagine your Maui vacation, you probably don't think of bamboo, but believe it or not, there is a developing culture around this unique crop on the island. Maui's natural resources are limited and keeping the environment pristine is essential to the health of residents and the economy. This is where bamboo comes in.

Whispering Winds is a bamboo and tropical hardwood plantation with the purpose of developing non-invasive bamboo for use in making homes, furniture, clothes, and even as an excellent food source. This versatile crop grows faster than any other tree harvested for timber and can be used in countless ways. While there are many pragmatic purposes for this plant, its benefits are aesthetic as well.

Bamboo is celebrated for its elegant and romantic beauty the world over. Even the sound of the wind blowing through its leaves is soothing. The plantation has taken advantage of these qualities as well. It is a beautiful place to visit and you can enjoy an informational tour or take a stroll through bamboo forests of many colors throughout the grounds.

There is a plant nursery and tropical fruit orchard on the plantation's 180 acres. Thirty-six species of bamboo are propogated there. If you would like to take a tour, it costs $20 per person and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. The tour includes driving in caravan fashion with guides at the front. For more information on what you will see on the tour, click here.

Whispering Winds is located in Kipahulu, which is 40 minutes from Hana towards Kaupo. Visiting the plantation is free, but you should call 248-7561 to let them know you are coming.
