Watch Coral Spawning on Your Maui Vacation
Maui's coral reefs are one of its greatest attractions, and it's no wonder with the myriad of colorful life it supports. Plenty of visitors have enjoyed the vibrant ecosystem surrounding coral, but how many have seen it spawn? The Maui Ocean Center is preparing for just such an event so that visitors can comfortably observe this exciting event.
Between 7:30p.m. and 9:30p.m. on Friday, July 24th, the coral will spawn in the Discovery Pool, the Surge Zone, Hawaiians and the Sea area, and in the candlelit Living Reef. The rice coral is the species that will spawn during this time, and special red lighting will illuminate the water so the process can be observed more easily.
Of course the staff will be there before hand, including Naturalists, Volunteers and Curators, to answer questions and enjoy the event with you. There will also be footage shown of previous spawns in the Living Reef exhibit. Complimentary coffee and deserts will be available, as well as a cash bar.
There will be another fun treat that night. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and the Natonal Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have provided a special underwater camera which will be in the Discovery Pool during the event. This camera will return live, up close imaging of the spawning.
Some of the proceeds from this event will be donated by the Aquarium to Project S.E.A.-Link which is a local nonprofit organization that promotes marine science, education and awareness. Call (808)270-7088 to reserve your spot for the Coral Spawning. Admission is $27 for adults, $22 for children 3 through 12, with special discounts for kama'aina and aquarium members.
