Maui's Winery at Ulupalakua Ranch
Maui's Winery at Ulupalakua Ranch is a beautiful place to spend your afternoon. If you are staying at one of our West Maui vacation rentals, the drive to this upcountry location is a long one, but once you're up there, it is gorgeous and you'll get stunning views of Maui's sparkling south shore. The photo opportunities are endless.
The historic Ulupalakua Ranch includes 20,000 acres. Two-thousand of these acres have a farming history that dates back to 1845. Now the ranch includes the Tedeschi Vineyards, which was established in 1974.
The Winery includes numerous delicious creations including red, white, sparkling and specialty wines. The wine tasting room is located in one of the most historic buildings on Maui, the King's Cottage, which dates back to 1874. It was built for King David Kalakaua and queen Kapi'olani. The king visited often during his reign, from 1874 until his death in 1891. He came back again and again for peace of mind. The tranquil setting will help to show you why.
Inside, you'll find shelves full of Hawaiian-made products and specialty foods and gifts. The eighteen foot bar was cut from a single mango tree. Outside, you'll find towering and stately trees, some of which are over a hundred years old. There are other buildings which are part of the historic heritage of the ranch as well. You will also see how the ranching culture shaped the place, and you can learn about the Hawaiian cowboys (Paniolos) that have long been part of that culture.
The tasting room is open from 10am to 5pm daily, except for major holidays, and three tours of the winery and the grounds are offered at no charge at the following times: 10:30am, 1:30pm, and 3pm. Check out the Maui Winery website for location and directions.
