Free Screening of The Secret Life of Animals Under the Open Maui Sky

Looking for something fun and relaxing that you can enjoy with the whole family on your Maui vacation? Why not see a movie? Okay, that is something you can do at home. But can you watch a movie on a sprawling grass lawn under a sky full of twinkling stars... for free? The Maui Arts & Cultural Center regularly provides Maui vacationers and residents alike with their Starry Night Cinema event, where you can watch a movie on the A&B Amphitheater lawn with a group of any size.

The next Starry Night Cinema showing is tomorrow night, March 11th, featuring The Secret Life of Pets. The film follows Max the terrier, (Louis C.K.), who enjoys a life of luxury and attention until his owners adopt a big mutt named Duke. The awkward pair have to set their differences aside when they find out that a white bunny named Snowball is building an army of discarded pets who are planning to take revenge on the humans. This plucky comedy actually highlights how much people love their pets and how important it is to take care of them, while conjuring up wacky ideas about what animals do when we're not looking.

The gates open at 5:30pm, but the movie starts at 7pm, giving everyone plenty of time to get settled in. They don't allow outside food or drink, but there will be food trucks selling very tasty and affordable fare to enjoy during the film. You can bring low-back beach chairs, blankets or mats to sit on. If it happens to be rainy, you can leave those things in the car and head to the spacious Castle Theater, which seats 1,200 people.

Hopefully, the weather will be nice and clear. Then you can admire the stars, which glow brighter here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean than most Mainland locations, thanks to a delightful lack of light pollution. Smog is also not a problem here, and although we can get vog from the volcanic activity of the Big Island, the prevailing trade winds tend to blow it away from Maui. So, if you attend Starry Night Cinema, don't be surprised if you spot some shooting stars.

If you arrive early, you can enjoy their preshow entertainment and the kids can participate in an art activity. They even have a prize giveaway that you can enter, and don't forget about the delicious food and beverage options. Maui vacation activities can get expensive pretty quickly, so if you want to make the kids happy and spare your budget, you'll have a hard time finding a better choice than this!
