10th Annual Seed to Cup Coffee Festival on Maui

Hawaii is most popularly known for its beautiful beaches, delightful accommodations, and long list of activities, but it's also known for producing some terrific coffee. Long ago, farmers learned that every unique environment leaves an indelible flavor stamp on the crops that grow there. From the rain and sun to the humidity and soil composition, everything plays a role. In fact, farmers have discovered that planting the same species of crop in different environments can make them taste like completely different varieties. Hawaii includes so many unique microclimates, farmers have had a field day growing food here. Maui onions and Kona coffee have become especially popular, and Hawaiian grown tea seems to be blazing new flavor trails, so to speak.

If you're a coffee connoisseur and you're on vacation to Maui, you can experience some local flavors for yourself by attending the 10th Annual Seed to Cup Coffee Festival, which is free and open to the public. The Maui Coffee Association will host the event at the scenic Maui Tropical Plantation in Wailuku, a site that attracts plenty of visitors on its own, thanks to its impressive collection of native Hawaiian plant species.

The festival will take place on Saturday, July 22nd, opening at 9am and closing at 3pm. You can swing by, sample some coffee, purchase what you like, and enjoy your beautiful surroundings with like-minded coffee lovers. You'll find that plenty of local residents are drawn to this event, as well as visitors, so it's a nice opportunity if you're looking for an authentic, not-so-touristy experience.

The highlights of the day include ongoing coffee pulping, hulling, brewing, and roasting demonstrations, as well as free tastings of some of Maui's award-winning coffee. You'll find coffee inspired and infused food for sale from the Mill House Chef Jeff Scheer, while Kohola Brewery will bring their coffee beer made exclusively from Maui grown coffee. Growers will hold demonstrations of their methods and techniques for backyard coffee growing, which might interest you if you've considered trying it yourself at home. Live musical performances will be held throughout the day, and there will even be a coffee inspired fashion show. Last but not least is the Barista Throw Down at 1pm, which challenges local Maui baristas to create the finest free-pour latte art in a friendly competition.

If you need more information, you can call David Gridley at 808-280-1623. The Maui Tropical Plantation is in Wailuku at 1670 Honoapiilani Hwy. Depending on traffic, the drive can take anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes if you happen to be staying at our Kaanapali accommodations.  If you've opted for a Lahaina vacation rental, that'll shave off about 10 minutes from your trip. Mahalo!
