Catch a Documentary Screening of Breadfruit on Your Maui Vacation

Looking to learn something new about Hawaiian culture and history? Why not catch a documentary film that follows the journey of breadfruit in Hawaii? It's an important plant, but not the most common subject when you're getting to know Hawaii. When it comes to agriculture, there's much more emphasis on taro, pandanus, ti plants, and such. So, not only will you get to watch an interesting film, but you'll be ahead of the curve among Maui visitors and even some residents when it comes to your knowledge of Hawaii's agricultural history.

"The Roots of 'Ulu" takes you along on the journey of breadfruit, beginning with its origins in Tahiti and the Polynesian voyaging that brought it to Hawaii. The story progresses to modern day efforts to sustain the cultural practices that involve the use of breadfruit. You'll get to hear from medical specialists, agricultural experts, native practitioners and others who have insights on the plant and its uses. They talk about everything from cultural preservation to food sustainability to health restoration.

You can catch the film at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC), which is about an hour from our West Maui vacation rentals. The screening will be held on Saturday, August 12th, 2017 at 5pm. To learn more and get tickets, you can visit www.mauiarts.org/ulu.

After the screening, guests can engage in a discussion with the producers of the film, John Antonelli and Matt Yamashita. There will also be some Maui 'ulu experts in the talk, like Mike Opgenorth, the director of Kahanu Garden and Preserve, as well as Hōkūao Pellegrino, an education specialist for Kamehameha Schools and co-owner and manager of Noho'ana Farm.

Conveniently, tickets are a reasonable $10 per person. If you're still not sold on the experience, but you want to enjoy some entertainment on your Maui vacation, browse through the MACC website to explore other events like shows, concerts, and exhibits. The MACC is located in Kahului, so there are plenty of great places nearby where you can grab a bite to eat or do some shopping.
