Hula Festival Under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina

On vacation to Maui? If you're looking for some fun entertainment this weekend, all you need to do is swing by the Banyan Tree in Lahaina Town. On Saturday and Sunday, August 12th and 13th, 2017, the Emma Farden Sharpe Hula Festival will take place under its sprawling canopy from 9am to 5pm. The Banyan Tree location will be especially convenient if you're staying in one of our Lahaina Shores condo rentals, which are just a couple of minutes away on foot. If you're staying anywhere in West Maui, you're bound to make a trip to Lahaina Town, so maybe this weekend is an ideal opportunity.

This hula festival is a celebration of Emma Farden Sharpe, a celebrated kumu hula (hula teacher) by showcasing a variety of hula performances. They cover everything from auana (new) to kahiko (old) in order to highlight the full spectrum of the dance as an art form that continues to evolve through the years. The islands have changed a great deal since the ancient times when hula was first practiced by Hawaiians, but fortunately, this rich cultural tradition has not been lost to time. Far from it! If you want to see hula performed on an island of its origins, why not swing by the festival?

Not only will there be hula performances from talented and skilled dancers, but like any other Maui celebration worth its salt, there will be exhibits and artisan vendors. There will also be a lifetime achievement award that will be presented to one of the prominent figures within the hula community of Maui. You can think of it as an inside look into the local culture of the island that most visitors don't get to see.

On Saturday, at 1pm, kumu hula Kathy Ralar will teach a workshop. Learning how to dance hula on your Maui vacation would certainly be fun and memorable, especially in terms of a unique experience. Plenty of visitors get to watch hula shows, but very few have the chance to jump in and learn. This workshop has limited availability though, so shoot an email to sfdhawaii@gmail.com if you're interested in reserving a spot. They may or may not have room left, but it's worth checking if you think it would make a fun addition to your vacation experiences.

Some of the other highlights of the festival are keiki (children's) activities, Maui Made crafter/artisan booths, and lei making, which is always fun for the creatively inclined. A movie will be shown nearby at the Old Lahaina Court House on the side of the Pioneer Inn. If you have a blanket or low beach chair, you might want to join and relax under the open sky.

When you're done with the festival, you can always explore the many charms of Lahaina Town, with all its restaurants, shops, art galleries, museums and numerous other attractions. As for your Maui accommodations, if you need any assistance with your booking, you'll find our contact information at the bottom of the page. Mahalo!
