See a Hula Competition on Your Maui Vacation

If you'll be visiting Maui during the second weekend of September, 2017, you picked the right time. From Thursday the 7th to Saturday the 9th, Maui's premiere hula competition, Kū Mai Ka Hula, will be taking place at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. That's about an hour from our West Maui vacation rentals, but well worth the trip if you want to see some of the best hula performances that the island has to offer.

The competition brings together award-wining hālau (hula schools) from all over Hawaii, but also from more distant locations like the U.S. Mainland and Japan. Yes, hula has captivated enough dancers to make some big leaps, in terms of geography. Fortunately, this competition brings a fantastic spectrum of performers together in one place, where you can watch them at their best. It's not just a casual hula show. These dancers are in the competition to win, and you can attend to see what that looks like.

There will be both male and female dancers in the competition, which will be made up of multiple categories, including kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (modern) hula stylings. On Thursday, there will be a discussion, on Friday evening, the solo competitions will be held, and Saturday afternoon will feature the group competitions and the awards ceremony. While the competition will be held in the spacious Castle Theater, there will also be a performance in the Yokouchi Pavilion by the Napili Kai Foundation under Kumu Hula (teacher) Holoau Ralar. This will take place from 11:45am until 12:30pm on Saturday.

Another one of the lures of this event is the made-in-Hawaii crafter and artisan booths that will be in the Yokouchi Pavilion throughout Friday and Saturday's performances. Not only will there be a fascinating collection of locally made arts, crafts, gifts and other items to choose from, but there will also be food and beverages available for purchase in the courtyard.

This event really is one of those delightful opportunities to experience Hawaiian culture at its finest and most authentic. If you're on a Maui vacation, whether with friends, or family, or your sweetheart, you won't want to miss this event. Ticket prices are more than reasonable, at $25 per person. There are two-day passes available for $45 per person, and children ages 12 and under get in at half price. If you want to get more details and buy tickets, you can visit www.mauiarts.org. In the meantime, if you need our assistance with your Maui vacation rental, you'll find our contact information at the bottom of the page. Mahalo!
