Chinese Moon Festival Celebration in Lahaina

One of the most interesting things about Hawaii is its unique mix of cultural influences. The local residents of today come from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds that became rooted here during the Plantation Era. That's why we have so many interesting celebrations that take place throughout the year. The next one is the Chinese Moon Festival, which will take place in Lahaina on Saturday, September 30th. It's a lot of fun for those who are interested in intercultural experiences. Not to mention that it's family friendly and admission is free.

The fact that the festival will take place in Lahaina Town only adds to the fun, since there are so many shops, restaurants, art galleries and other attractions all at the same scenic location. You could easily hop on a boat tour in the morning and spend your afternoon having a nice lunch and shopping before finishing off the day at the festival, which starts at 10am and ends at 9pm.

The Moon Festival will be hosted by the Wo Hing Museum & Cookhouse on Front Street. Admission to the museum will be free from September 25th to the 30th in honor of the festival. On the day of the festival, you'll get to observe a celebration of the harvest of Maui's locally grown produce alongside time-honored traditions from China. There will be lovely lanterns, offerings made to the moon goddess, cultural activities, traditional music, and Chinese cooking demos. There will also be a crafting area where kids can make paper lanterns of their own.

If you feel like trying something sweet, there will be Chinese moon cakes for sale. In fact, they'll be available for purchase all week. You can buy a decorative box that includes either four large or six small moon cakes for $20. Tea will be served in the garden from 5pm to 9pm, accompanied by traditional music, featuring a performance on the gu zheng harp.

Guests can try their hand at knot tying and calligraphy, while local artists will provide demonstrations of moon paintings. You won't want to miss the fan, ribbon and umbrella dances at 6pm, courtesy of the Maui Academy of Performing Arts Summer Musical Theater. At 7pm, you can sit in on a talk on the history of moon festivals in China.

Conveniently, we have Lahaina accommodations within easy walking distance of Front Street, so if you're still looking for the right Maui vacation rental for your trip, you'll find some great options here. If you need our assistance, you'll find our contact information at the bottom of the page. For more information on the festival, you can visit lahainarestoration.org. Mahalo!
