Starry Night Cinema Showing of Beauty and the Beast

Every so often, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) hosts a Starry Night Cinema event, where everyone is invited to their spacious lawn in the A&B Amphitheater to watch a movie for free on a giant screen. What's the catch? There really isn't one, unless you count that they don't allow outside food and beverages. Whether you're traveling with your sweetheart, friends or kids, just think how much you would spend on movie tickets, when you could be enjoying balmy tropical breezes, a starry open sky, good company and a free movie instead.

Beauty and the Beast will grace the screen on Friday, September 15th at 7pm. It's is a well-received live-action remake of Disney's original animated film, and to the delight of loyal fans, it stays very true to the original. The original music is part of the film, but so are several new songs. Emma Watson plays Belle, the beautiful, young, forward thinking woman who finds herself swept up in a story as fantastical as her favorite fiction novels.

Other notable roles include Dan Stevens as the temperamental beast of the castle, Luke Evans as the egomaniacal Gaston, and Josh Gad as his loyal henchman LeFou. The enchanted characters of the castle are played by the most accomplished actors in the cast, including Ewan McGreggor as Lumieére, the flirtatious French candleabra, Sir Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the dour clockwork head of household, and Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, the hospitable teapot.

If you haven't gotten around to seeing the film in the theater yet, this is a perfect opportunity to enjoy it for free, which will also spare your Maui vacation budget. If you'd like, you can arrive early for preshow entertainment, including an art activity for the kids. There will also be a prize giveaway. Of course, no movie is complete without snacks, but don't worry. Although they don't allow outside food and drinks, you can buy some from wonderful local food trucks to enjoy during the show. If there happens to be rain, the show will be moved inside to the spacious Castle Theater.

The show will start at 7pm, and the MACC is located in Kahului, about an hour from our West Maui vacation rentals, so you can plan your schedule accordingly. There are plenty of places where you can shop or grab a bite to eat beforehand in Kahului. As for the show, guests are encouraged to bring low-backed chairs and/or blankets to make their experience comfortable. For more details on this and the many other shows and events at the MACC, visit mauiarts.org. Mahalo!
