Attend an Ukulele Workshop on Your Maui Vacation

If you're musically inclined, Maui can be a really fun place to visit, especially if you want to learn how to play the ukulele. What better place to learn than in Hawaii, where the instrument originated? And what better people to learn from than the ones who have been playing for generations? Although some folks might assume the ukulele represents a niche of interests as instruments go, but in fact, it has only been gaining popularity all around the world.

If you're interested in jumping on the chance to learn some ukulele strumming techniques while you're here on Maui, there's an ongoing workshop that takes place every Saturday from 10am to 11am. The location is in Wailuku, which is in the Central Maui area, about an hour drive if you're staying at our West Maui vacation rentals. While you're there, you can take advantage of numerous places to shop or dine out. It could easily be a half-day visit.

As for the workshop, Mele Fong will be teaching introductory techniques to making music "the Ukulele Mele Way." Mele Fong is an experienced educator and a professional entertainer, so you're sure to glean some valuable information from your session. Fong will teach you a unique method of forming ukulele chords with minimal muscle strain, which would be especially ideal if you have physical limitations. You won't learn these techniques anywhere else on the island.

The workshop is designed to be fun, and you'll get to join in on sing-along songs with the accompaniment of a professional ukulele bass player as you learn Fong's techniques. Conveniently, there are supplemental materials to help you continue your learning, including online information, single song downloads, and packaged song sets of book/DVD/CDs. These cover experience ranges from beginner to intermediate to advanced.

If this workshop has piqued your interest, make sure you register ahead of time, because space is limited. The price is $10 per person. Conveniently, that includes your cover fee to get into the Bailey House, a historical site that features the largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts in Maui County. To rent an ukulele, an additional fee of $10 is required, and you'll need to let them know when you RSVP. You can learn more at ukuleleworkshops.eventbrite.com.

We hope you have an enriching and educational experience that fuels your enthusiasm for learning to play the ukulele. In the meantime, if you need any help with your Maui vacation accommodations, you'll find our contact information at the bottom of the page. We would be happy to assist you. Mahalo!
