Enjoy Live Music at the Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival 2018

Still planning your Maui vacation schedule for April? If you and your fellow travelers love attending live music performances, and exciting events, you're sure to have fun at the upcoming 10th Annual Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival. It's a great opportunity to get out and be social with fellow guests while soaking in the soothing sounds of beautiful steel guitar musical compositions from some of Hawaii's finest performers.

The sounds of the Hawaiian steel guitar are unique, and have become a trademark of old time Hawaiian music. When the guitar was introduced to Hawaii, this style was developed by the creative local musicians of the era. That's why the sounds of the Hawaiian steel guitar are so distinct and have come to be so strongly associated with the islands. By the way, we know that there are plenty of ways to fill your vacation time. In fact, you often need multiple trips to Maui if you want to do and see it all. But if your schedule is relatively packed, why not make some time for a relaxing afternoon spent lounging and listening to soothing Hawaiian music?

If you're interested, drop by the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel on Friday, April 13th or Saturday the 14th between 11am and 10pm. There will be open stage performances from 11am to 4pm, so those are the hours you may want to aim for. They're also planning six presentations each night, the first one starting at 5:30pm and the last one at 8:30pm. At 9:30pm, there will be kanikapila jam sessions for the public, hosted by master steel guitar players. Other highlights include steel guitar workshops, a silent auction, cultural activities and a vintage steel guitar exhibit, courtesy of Geri Valdriz.

As for the performers, this year's lineup will include:

  • Alan Akaka
  • Tadashi Arakawa
  • Bobby Ingano
  • Joel Katz
  • Kiyoshi "Lion" Kobayashi
  • Dave "DK" Kolars
  • Patti Maxine
  • Greg Sardinha
  • Alexis Tolentino
  • Geri Valdriz

In addition, they'll have some special guests, including student musicians Tai, Joey and Mailie, as well as student quartet Anegogumi, who are coming all the way from Japan, and the 17-member Yokohama Hawaiian Music Academy Band. Watching students perform is always a treat, especially when they add their own new spin on things.

Although the first two days of the event are conveniently located at Kaanapali Beach Hotel near our West Maui vacation rentals, there will also be some festivities on Sunday, April 15th in Kahului at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center from 11:30am to 4pm. If you'd like to combine some shopping with live music, this might be your preferred option. If you need more information, you'll find all the details at www.mauisteelguitarfestival.com. If you need assistance with your Maui vacation accommodations, feel free to contact us, and we will be happy to help! Mahalo!
