Maui's Colorful Beaches

West Maui Condos

One of the most distinguishing characteristics of Maui is how much variety you will find in its beach sand colors. White sand is pretty common, but have you ever spent your time enjoying a black or red sand beach? Here is a quick reference guide to all three colors!

Black Sand

Maui's black sand beaches get their color from the pulverized lava rock that makes up the vast majority of its composition. Most lava rock is black, so wherever you find black sand beaches is where an old lava flow has been worn down by the elements.

Wai'anapanapa Beach in East Maui is a local favorite for its stark black sand, which contrasts beautifully against the blue ocean, white foam, and the bright green plant life along the shore. While you are visiting this beach, you will also see many unique lava tube features and a sea cave on the beach. You can easily find Wai'anapanapa State Park on any decent map. It's located just before Hana if you're coming in along the north side of the island.

Red Sand

Red sand is also created by lava flows, just like black sand, but the red color, which is particularly rare, comes from its iron rich composition. You'll find similar colors in Haleakala Crater, which is full of red and orange cindercones. Maui's red sand beaches are some of the very few that exist anywhere in the world.

  • South Maui - South Maui has one red sand beach, and that is Onelui Beach, located off Wailea Alanui Drive. Nearby is the cindercone that created the dark red color. You'll have to make a bit of a trek to get to this beach, but once you do, it is very interesting scenery and the snorkeling is wonderful when conditions are right. Be aware that there are no lifeguards there.
  • East Maui - Kaihulu is another beautiful red sand beach, but it is also a nude beach, so be aware of that. It is located on the south side of Hana Bay on the far edge of Ka'uiki Hill.

White Sand

When it comes to Maui's white sand beaches, there are so many beautiful options, it can be hard to choose. White sand is created by coral and shell. Considering the beautiful reefs surrounding the island, it should come as no surprise that the vast quantity of white sand on the island was created by coral. Here are some suggestions for great white sand beaches on Maui.

  • West Maui - These beaches are well-loved for their tranquil conditions and great snorkeling spots. Kaanapali Beach is a top favorite, where you'll find most of our vacation rentals. Launiupoko can be found on the way to Lahaina from central Maui and lies right along the road. There are great spots for surfing and snorkeling here.
  • South Shore - Makena Beach (aka Big Beach) offers about a mile of sprawling white-orange sand, dramatic views and gorgeous water. Keawakapu Beach is another great favorite for its wonderful scenery, tranquil water, and fascinating tidepools.
  • North Shore - Most North Shore beaches are your best choice for windsurfing and surfing activities. The favorites here include Ho'okipa for surfing and Baldwin for soaking up the sun in milder conditions. You'll have no trouble finding these on any halfway decent map if you look at the north shore.
