Haleakala Crater Visit on Your Maui Vacation

Kaanapali Vacation Rental Condos

As most people know, the seasons are more distinct the further you are from the equator, but Maui is pretty close to it, so it tends to be warm all year round. That being said, there is a slight temperature variation with slightly cooler winters. That's when we get the big waves that surfers love so much, but if you are planning a trip up to the summit of Haleakala at 10,023 feet, it can get extremely cold, meaning summer is a great time to go.

If you aren't familiar with "The Crater," as locals call it, it is a geological anomaly at the top of Haleakala, the taller of the two mountains on Maui, which also bears less erosion on its young slopes. The elevation gives the summit an astoundingly clear view of the sky, and you can easily see the white observatory buildings that were constructed there to take advantage of that clarity.

At 19 square miles, the Crater of Haleakala is just slightly smaller than the island of Manhattan, and its landscape is full of stark cinder cones with red and orange hues thanks to its iron rich sand.

Haleakala means "House of the Sun," which is appropriate, considering that the sun rises from behind it, assuming you are not on the east side of the mountain. Watching the sun rise from the summit is considered a life-altering, beautiful experience to many, and so is watching the night sky, when it's challenging not to spot numerous shooting stars.

If you'd like the make the trip up there to take in all these wondrous sights, just be sure to fill your gas tank for the drive, which will be long if you are coming from one of our Kaanapali vacation rental condos or any other West Maui area. You can stop for snacks at Sunrise Market on Crater Road, but look up their hours depending on when you plan to head up there. Oh, and don't forget your camera!
