Adopt a Maui Pet

Vacation to MauiEvery so often, pet lovers find themselves looking for a new companion, whether because they want to expand their family, or to ease the strain of losing a beloved animal friend. A vacation to Maui is sure to put you in high spirits either way, but now, there's also an exciting program with the Maui Humane Society that you might find very interesting.

The Wings of Aloha transfer program allows you to adopt a pet here on the island, after which time, they will fly your pet to the mainland at no charge. Every year, they take in about 9,000 animals, but there are many places on the mainland that don't have to contend with so many homeless animals. That's why the transfer program is able to send animals to animal welfare partners as well as new owners out there.

This program is more expensive than other transfer programs in the U.S. because air travel is the only option. It costs between $200-600 to fly an animal to the Mainland and return their kennel to the shelter to be reused. The cost is covered entirely by financial contributions from the community. As you can imagine, donations are very welcome.

Some might wonder why that money isn't spent on trying to find local homes for the animals, but the answer is that there just isn't enough demand. The Maui Humane Society is already using every method it knows to help facilitate local pet adoption, but reaching this saturation point and subsequent overflow requires a transfer program like this one.

The Maui Humane Society is located in Puunene, which is near Kahului. It's about 45 minutes away from our Kaanapali accommodations. You can always browse pets online before going in person. Their website is www.mauihumanesociety.org. We hope that if you're looking for a new companion, you find one here on Maui!

Mahalo for reading this week, and have a wonderful Maui vacation!
