Maui Trail of the Whale

Vacation to MauiNow that whale season is in full swing, you might want to do some whale watching. You don't have to get on a boat for this. Just bring a good pair of binoculars with you on your vacation to Maui. There's plenty to see from shore, as humpbacks are the most acrobatic of all the baleen whales. They pop up often, and since they come here to give birth to their calves, you might also see one of these little giants making an appearance above the waves. If you plan to do some whale watching from shore, you may be interested to know that the Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) has information stations set up at various coastal locations on the island, which they are collectively calling the Trail of the Whale.

As of Sunday, December 15th, the PWF will have trained naturalists stationed at these locations to answer questions and help you spot whales. There's quite a bit to know about these gentle giants, so don't be afraid to quiz the naturalists on duty. They will be stationed through the season until mid-May.

Here is a list of the naturalist locations:

  • Papawai Point - offered daily from 8am-2:00pm. Scenic overlook off of Honoapi‘ilani Highway (Route 30), 3 miles west of Ma‘alaea Harbor
  • Wailea Marriott - offered Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30-11:30am. Oceanfront path in front of Wailea Marriott, off Wailea Alanui Drive
  • Maui Ocean Club - offered Wednesday and Friday from 7:30-11:30am. Oceanfront path in front of Marriott's Maui Ocean Club, Ka‘anapali
  • Ulua Beach - offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8-11:30 am. Coral reef information station open year-round at Ulua Beach, Wailea

The closest location to our West Maui vacation rentals is the Maui Ocean Club. Papawai Point is a popular one along the route between West Maui and Central Maui. There are a lot of good sightings there, and the high vantage point makes the views even better. If you don't have binoculars, these stations will have some that you can use, and they will also be outfitted with spotting scopes, which are also really convenient to use. Naturalists will have marine models and artifacts. If you visit all four stations, and get a stamp from each on your Trail of the Whale certificate, then you will get a free gift at the PWF Ocean Store in Ma'alaea, or at 612 Front Street in Lahaina. If you're staying in West Maui, the Front Street location will be the most convenient. You can plan a visit for shopping, dining and collecting your gift on another day of your vacation.
