Makawao Forest Reserve

Makawao forest reserve is one of those fun, upcountry destinations that most visitors don't hear about. It boasts many excellent hiking and biking trails of varying difficulties as well as numerous streams and even a large reservoire. One of the best things about the forest reserve is that a wide variety of fascinating plant species can be found there.

Historically, the forest reserve was once the subject of a timber experiment in which many different kinds of trees from the US and various other countries were planted there. The objective was to find out if any of these species would thrive enough to be consistantly harvested in this moist, high elevation environment. Although many non-native trees were introduced to the island for the sake of this experiment, some native species can still be found there, including the well-known ohia lehua tree that provides nectar for native honycreepers.
